Even though many other people would choose to discuss their essay on the topic of a megalomaniac dictator ruling over the United Kingdom and how a vengeful opponent arises from the past to counter his reign of treachery over the British people, I didn’t. No, I chose a different path. A path that affects those who are different from the rest of society and because of this become eventually and totally out-casted by the surrounding world. This is what I believe the main theme of V For Vendetta to be.
Within the beginning of the movie, we acknowledge that Great Britain is under the control of a totalitarian government with their being a curfew in affect after dark. This informs us that not only is the current government in control of the country a dictatorial-ship, but a fascist one as well. Fascists usually eliminate people deemed weak and unworthy to be in the presence of their rule and this is why I believe that the major theme in the film is the attack on the freedom of minorities.
Be it Muslims, Jews, blacks, homosexuals or communists, the socially-conservative and openly fascist Norsefire party led a purge to restore order and eliminate those who are enemies of the state: those who are oppressed. They do this by “wiping them off the face of the planet” as Evey Hammond put it while talking about her encounters with the police over the years seeing that her family were socialists and therefore posed a threat towards Norsefire.
One particular comedically put reference to the oppression of minorities within the film is when Evey and Gordon are in his hidden chamber beneath his house.
[After noticing a Koran in Gordon’s secret chamber.]
Evey Hammond: Are you a Muslim?
Gordon Deitrich: No. I’m in television.
This shows much relevance to my theory that minorities are ridiculed in 2038, the year which this film is based in.
In concluding this essay, I wish to leave you with my hypothesis on why this theme is not only important to understand within the movie, but within everyday society as well. The movie portrays a protagonist who strives to relieve the current reigning government of their duties because of their misuse of power and wrongful deeds which include eliminating the very societies, lifestyles and differences that make our world such a beautiful thing.
Now, why is it important to realize this in reality and not a fictional drama? Well, for sometime we slipped out of the anti-diverse way of living and formed a way of life where multi-culturalism was the norm. Unfortunately, we’ve taken a turn for the worse. Dictorialship has been on going in the United States of America for the past 8 years now and the similarities between President Bush’s rule and High Chancellor Sutlers’ are surprisingly numerous. I find it strange how terrorism plays such a large role when comparing the two dictators. Both so called “terrorist” attacks in each scenario, one being 9/11 and the other being the bio-terrorism attack, sparked the fear within the population needed for each government to relieve all freedom from their people.
Could we ever go back to the days where being different is acceptable?
